Monica Trevisi: handmade and contemporary design

In Mogliano Veneto there’s an atelier in which product come from industrial materials

Some time ago in a photo session, I used a long necklace made of metal links ending with a magnifying glass, from the Monoclò collection. That jewel, so unique, became my travel companion for many months. I wore it, studied it and tried it with different outfits until it almost became part of me, an accessory I couldn’t do without.

I was curious about the history of the object that I always kept with me, so I went looking for the designer who created it. I arrived in Mogliano Veneto, more precisely in Campocroce, where the building of an old spinning mill from the 1800, the Filanda Motta, has been archeologically-industrially restored, and set up to become art and creative workshops like the one of Monica Trevisi, who created the Monoclò collection.

Monica’s studio is warm and full of light, with hundreds of jewels created by her. Monica started her activity, a bit as a game, in 2001.

Since then she’s done really well. Her career has had ups and downs, she visited many fairs in Italy and abroad, and she received many awards, among which one for being the first to transform industrial springs, working them in such a way to turn them into a sort of fabric (many of her competitors use them now too).

As she sips her coffee on a beautiful antique table, Monica tells her story through her creations. She doesn’t like to catalogue her ideas but prefers to let her emotions and feelings run free and see how people interpret her work.

She loves springs, because even if the metal is cold, they almost feel soft and warm like fabric, like velvet.

She uses many different materials like precious stones, leather, pvc and resin. She’s already planning on using new material for her projects.

Monica impressed me quite a bit, not only for her creations, but also for her way of being delicate but strong, free and organized at the same time. Without adding too many words, I’ll let you decide if loving Monica’s work, a designer with a unique sensibility.

Also, if you’re in Trieste, you can actually see and touch Monica’s creations, in Giada’s shop. Go and have a look and let yourself be impressed.
