Where to Stay in Postojna: Pira Hotel — Design and Wellbeing in the Heart of Slovenia
A stay surrounded by nature and tradition, just steps from the Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle
I returned to Postojna, Slovenia, after 13 long years — even though it’s only a 30-minute drive from my home in Opicina. It’s funny how life takes you far away, only to bring you back so close. In truth, I’ve always felt connected to this place: my grandmother was born here — back in 1916 — and tracing that memory back to that number gave me chills.
The hills around Postojna are made of white rock, with hidden caves and meadows alternating with forests. It’s a landscape that feels both peaceful and full of stories.
A Few Facts About Postojna
• Where it is: Postojna (in Slovene “Postojna”) is located in southwestern Slovenia, in the historical region of Carniola (Kranjska), not far from the Adriatic coast and Trieste. • A bit of history: Since the Middle Ages, the area has been strategically important thanks to its position between the Karst plateau and the inland routes of the peninsula. The Postojna Caves became famous in the 19th century, among the first in Europe to open for guided tourism. • Nature and landscape: The area is characterized by typical karst scenery — white limestone rocks, plateaus, sinkholes, caves — and forests and meadows that change color with the seasons: from the bright green of spring to the golden ochre of autumn. The world-renowned Postojna Caves are a truly spectacular underground wonder.
Thanks to Work — and the Discovery of the Pira Hotel
I came here for work: Robert called to ask if I’d like to present his “new creation” — a boutique property opened two years ago, designed as the perfect getaway for anyone seeking peace and nature, just a short drive from home. The project immediately caught my attention: elegance meets warmth, with great attention to detail, natural materials, and a color palette that reflects the surrounding landscape.
Wood, stone, and the ever-changing colors of the forest come together to create a modern, refined space — yet completely in tune with nature.
The Property in Detail • The main building: A 400-year-old house protected by the Slovenian Heritage Authority, a typical local construction with a red-tiled, multi-level roof. Inside: 5 rooms of various types, including two on the upper floor with high wooden ceilings (~4.5 m), in-room bathtubs plus spacious showers, and elegant tiles sourced from Rolich in Aurisina (Italy). Rooms host 2–4 guests, either in open-space or with separate bedrooms.
A room that caught my eye: the “black kitchen” — the house’s original kitchen, with a stone ceiling and restored wood-burning oven, where you can almost hear the crackle of the fire.
The apartment: located in a small restored cottage next to the main building, made of stone and wood with terracotta tiles. Ground floor: large living room, kitchen, wine cellar, bathroom. Upper floor: open-plan “mountain lodge chic” space with 6 beds and a round bathtub.
The restaurant: a new glass-and-steel structure (dark steel and reflective glass), reminiscent of a greenhouse — you dine indoors but feel surrounded by nature. The cuisine: meat and fish, prepared simply and with top-quality ingredients. Chef Robert (with 20+ years of experience) focuses on authenticity, no unnecessary frills. The restaurant is open to both hotel guests and external visitors: during low season, dinners from Wednesday to Saturday, Sunday lunch. Breakfast is served in the main hall: sweet and savory options, fresh yogurt and fruit, homemade jams. Every detail of the design is carefully curated — from table settings to dishware and furniture.The wine cellar bridges Slovenia and Italy, with a selection personally curated by Ana, Robert’s wife and sommelier. There’s also an indoor barbecue for select international cuts of meat. The dining area extends over two floors: upstairs, a mezzanine for events or meetings (equipped with screen and “director’s chairs”);
The wellness area overlooking the garden. There are three saunas of different sizes and temperatures, plus a private area for two with loungers, shower, whirlpool, and fresh snacks. The wellness area is free for guests staying more than one night; external visitors can access it for about €25 (two hours) or €35 (four hours) in low season.
Why I love it: because it offers true peace — a refuge in nature, yet still so close to Friuli Venezia Giulia and Trieste.
Things to Do Nearby
• Postojna Caves: a must-see. Descending into this underground world is a magical experience. • Predjama Castle: an astonishing fortress built right into the rock face. Absolutely worth a visit — full of legends and medieval charm. • Walks: you can start directly from the hotel, along gentle trails crossing meadows and hills, alternating between fields and forest. • For expert hikers: Mount Nanos offers more demanding routes and sweeping panoramic views. • For cyclists: the surrounding hills feature well-maintained, smooth asphalt roads. Pira Hotel provides standard bicycles (non-electric) — if you prefer e-bikes, consider bringing your own. I opted for the car this time — as a true “Pirona” (Triestine joke).
A Tip for a “Genuine Stop”
If you’re after a simple, tasty lunch: just a few minutes from the hotel is Avio Pub, also run by Robert — where it all began. It’s located right next to Postojna’s small ultralight airport. The food is homemade, fresh, and full of flavor — with honest prices and a welcoming atmosphere.
